November 18 - 22, 2019

We have been investigating competition and organism interactions in order to answer the question “What are the benefits and risks of building a pipeline through Yosemite Park?” This week, we will focus on Human Dependence on Natural Resources. In Math we will advance our understanding of circles further by learning to calculate circumference of a circle.  Additionally, when given Circumference, students will be able to find the radius and diameter. This is still in Unit 3 of Illustrative Math. In addition, students should be working on their Khan Academy Assignments in class, but may be completing them at home as well. Remember that practice can be found on KhanAcademy in the Illustrative Math section!

Today we will be furthering our discussion of Human Dependence on Natural Resources. We will have our second in class debate today!  We will walk to the picnic tables outside the Children’s Theater and students will be given time and resources to prepare. (Fracking for resources?)   Please note that on Wandering Wednesdays, as with every school outing, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices! Unless severe weather is in the area, we will do our excursions, rain or shine.

Thursday
Science Block
We will have our second in-class debate today!  Students will have time in class to research and prepare.  (a hint… fracking for fuel?) They will research both sides of the argument and prepare to present their argument and rebuttal.  Their responses will be graded on a rubric.

October 28 - November 1, 2019

This week we will further our investigation into the question “What are the benefits and risks of building a pipeline through Yosemite Park?” by wrapping up our understanding of competition and beginning to think about the Interactions of Organisms. In Math we will continue on our understanding of proportion by exploring common mathematical relationships, i.e. measuring cooking ingredients, communicating speed, etc.  This is Unit 2 of Illustrative Math. In addition, students should be working on their Khan Academy Assignments in class, but may be completing them at home as well. Remember that practice can be found on KhanAcademy in the Illustrative Math section!

October 21 - 25, 2019

I hope you have had a restful Fall Break! I am so excited to share our new curriculum with everyone!  We are now working with the STEMScopes curriculum. While we experience it together for the first time, we will chunk information into more bite size pieces, while working towards a bigger question.  This will also adjust the order in which we do things. So while I am excited to learn more about the ocean and weather, we are going to push that off just a little bit in order to investigate the following question.  “What are the benefits and risks of building a pipeline through Yosemite Park?”  In Math we will continue to expand on our understanding of proportion by beginning conversations on Ratios, Unit Rates, and Graphical representation of Proportions.  This is Unit 2 of Illustrative Math. In addition, students should be working on their Khan Academy Assignments in class, but may be completing them at home as well. Remember that practice can be found on KhanAcademy in the Illustrative Math section!

Wandering Wednesday
Science Block
We will begin our investigation into the following question.  “What are the benefits and risks of building a pipeline through Yosemite Park?”  Our investigation will begin with an understanding of competition among organisms and how invasive species exemplify the impacts of competition.  We will be wandering tomorrow instead of today!

Thursday
Science Block
Students will spend the entire class working to create a public service announcement discussing “How have invasive species impacted our community?”  We will be wandering outside today to identify invasive species for inclusion in our project.  Please note that on Wandering Wednesdays (and THURSDAYS), as with every school outing, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices!  Unless severe weather is in the area, we will do our excursions, rain or shine.

FriYAY!
Students will begin to work on a new FriYAY project!

October 14 - 18, 2019

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our first Exhibition Day! Those of you who were not able to make it were missed!

I hope you enjoyed the projects which evidenced our investigation on Volcano Farming, we are now moving on to a new investigation!  What causes climates to be so different across the Earth? Over the course of the next 6 weeks, students will be investigating weather, climate, winds, air masses, and ocean currents in order to determine how our global climate is affected by these things.  In Math we will continue to expand on our understanding of scale and proportion. Remember that Math practice can be found on KhanAcademy in the Illustrative Math section!

Monday

Today we will wander outside to the Howard building where we will sit with our partners and contemplate our new question “What causes climates to be so different across the Earth?”  We will use our previous brainstorm of our current understanding and the smaller questions we created to plan our groups’ specific approach. Students will see an example product based on the current rubric.  Please note that on Wandering Wednesdays, as with every school outing, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices! Unless severe weather is in the area, we will do our excursions, rain or shine.

Students will begin researching their project with their peers.  Their research project will culminate in a product that will demonstrate their understanding of the new project Rubric. There are so many different products to choose from! Here are 72 Creative Ways to Show What You Know! Finally, we will be setting up our projects for the Exhibition Night, including our super secret fundraising project!
