February 26-March 2, 2018

I hope you are well as we enter another week!  This week, we will be revisiting energy and begin talking about how energy transfers though various environments. The concepts this week will be familiar to most.

Key vocabulary include: biotic, abiotic, biosphere, ecosystem, population, community, ecology, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, producer, consumer, decomposer, scavenger, food web, food chain, energy pyramid

Monday – We will begin our week with a visit from VSVS!  They will share a hands-on experience about Electrolysis of Water and Fuel Cells.

Tuesday
– Setup for the STEAM Fair begins!  We will bring our projects to the gym to be put on display.  Students will also receive a new menu on the topic of Interdependence.  Specifically we will begin looking at food webs vs. food chains and how it is naturally organized.  The menu is abbreviated this week because of all of our activities.  A sample of the new menu can be found here. (Completing 2 activities per day will keep students on track!)

Wednesday – Students will complete an interactive lesson on Food Webs and how disrupting these systems has extended effects.  Homework is to reflect on the glows and grows of the activities.

Thursday – Students will continue to work on their menus. The goal is to complete 2 activities. STEAM Night will take place in the evening!  I am excited to be showing off the robot with some of my team.

Friday – Students who have completed their menu work will participate in a review game of Kahoot! Students will take a quiz on how energy travels through food webs.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, thoughts, or concerns! I hope you have a great week!

February 20 - 23, 2018

This week, students will be presenting their STEAM Fair projects or experiments to the class!  While students are observing the presentations, they will be required to score each presentation by a rubric and then reflect on one thing they enjoyed and one question they still have.  In addition, there will be a question answer period where presenters will select and answer audience questions! Finally, they will be given an opportunity to reflect on the student feedback and determine what their next steps may be. Students will not have homework and there will be no quiz this week.
UPDATE! The Gigabots robotics team had a mixed competition at MLK this weekend competing against 37 other middle and high school teams.  While we had some challenges to overcome in the competition, One of our drivers, Alec, scored the highest individual skills score in the clawbots division! Thank you to those who came out to support our Gigabots and Mrs. Moore's Moorebots!  We will keep you posted on the next event.  And if you are looking for another way to support us, we are selling popcorn!  Information available upon request!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, thoughts, or concerns! I hope you have a great week!

I hope you had an excellent weekend!  This week we will be continuing our discussions and discovery related to Energy!

Monday – Students will receive a new menu on the topic of Types of Energy and Energy Transformations.  A sample can be found here.  We will also pass back test results and discuss our current progress. (Completing 2 activities per day will keep students on track!)

Tuesday – Students will continue to work on their menus.  The goal is to complete 2 activities.

Wednesday – Students will continue to work on their menus.  The goal is to complete 2 activities.

Thursday – Students will continue to work on their menus.  The goal is to complete 2 activities.  Students will also be turning in their Science Fair Tri-folds and Notebooks/logbook.

Friday – Students will take a test on Types of Energy and Energy Transformations.

In other news, the Gigabots robotics team that I coach competed in their first competition over the weekend and had what we would call a successful event.  We beat our goal, learned a lot of valuable lessons, forged mentorships with high schoolers and had an incredible time!  Thank you to those of you who helped to make it possible!  We will be starting a fundraiser for Robotics next week so look out for additional information on buying popcorn to support the Gigabots!

Our Maker Space enrichment project is still in progress.  While the students have moved on to another enrichment class, we continue to collaborate with Mrs. Kelly on developing the new school Maker Space!  You can be part of our efforts!  The Donor's Choose link is always at the very bottom of this email and any support would be appreciated!  We are currently working on acquiring various robotics and sewing items.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, thoughts, or concerns! I hope you have a great week!
